This clinic provides accessible, less expensive animal care. I appreciate that, given the number of very expensive clinics in the area. The staff are pleasant, the atmosphere casual. If you choose to use this clinic, however, be sure that your pet gets the care and screening they require by asking the vet to read your pet's chart before beginning the visit. Bring a checklist of what is typically done during their annual physical and any visit related to a particular illness. You can find or create the checklists based on information from Veterinary School websites. Discuss the checklist with your vet. You may not understand all of the veterinary jargon on the websites, but you can always ask the vet to explain it to you. Use the lists to make sure that the vets do all the main, usual diagnostic and screening tests listed for your pet’s annual physical and/or issue. Early diagnosis leads to better health outcomes…and a lower likelihood of death. Caught early, specialist care is less likely to be required – many illnesses can be handled at the clinic if treatment is not delayed. Ask for a copy of the notes and test results and review all lab work. Ask what the abnormal findings mean. The vets may need to be reminded to follow up on abnormal test results. Sometimes results don’t make it into your pet’s folder, which can prevent detection of issues. If the vet you are meeting with says that there is no need for blood tests (even though none have been done in over a year)– that they already know that the tests won't tell them anything new - don’t believe them. Ask to speak with another vet. If a vet routinely avoids the diagnostic process, punting it to Garden State Veterinary Hospital (the only specialty hospital that doesn't require your vet to do a full work up before you can see a specialist and where a medication mistake landed my last dog in the ICU for several days), then tells you that your pet will be given all sorts of unnecessary tests there and it will be really expensive, and probably not necessary, discouraging you from taking that step, ask to speak with another vet for the straight story. The bottom line is that some of the staff (especially those at the front desk) at this this clinic may have their hearts in the right place, but it is helpful to do your “due diligence” to make sure your pet gets the right, complete care. Don't trust...verify. Unfortunately, one vet didn't follow up and/or treat in response to abnormal kidney-related findings and another refused to do even routine follow up blood tests. These factors ultimately led to the untimely, preventable death of my beautiful, sweet, 4 year old shepherd. Rest in peace Brooklyn.
